When the then Lady Diana Spencer was jettisoned into the limelight aged 19, she did so with a short rounded bob. As her confidence grew, so did the volume of her hair. Through much of the 80s the Princess donned a glamorous feathered shag cut – often swept to one side and topped with a tiara or a statement hat.
In 1990, the Princess met hair stylist Sam McKnight, who refreshed and modernised her look. Upon first meeting McKnight, she asked, ‘What would you do with my hair if I just said do anything?’ He said, ‘I would cut it all off and start again.’ She replied, ‘Well, why don’t you cut it off now?’ – and so he did. McKnight remained her stylist until her death in 1997.
Here are her best hairstyle moments.
