1. More ants exist on Earth than any other kind of animal.

2. A typical ant colony has between 20,000 and 40,000 members.

3. For their size, ants are extraordinarily tough. 50 times their own weight and more can be lifted.

4. Pheromones, which are chemical signals, are how ants interact with one another.

5. While queen ants can live up to 20 years, worker ants can only survive up to seven years.

6. Some ant species are capable of making extensive journeys, covering up to 6 miles (10 km) in a single day.

7. As they look for food, ants, which are very important pollinators, transfer pollen from flower to flower.

8. Some queen ants can produce up to 800 eggs every single day.

9. The largest known ant colony, which included over 300 million individual ants and covered 2,800 miles (4,500 km), was found in 2000 close to Melbourne, Australia.

10. Each year, fire ants do more than $4 billion in damage!
