Last summer, there was a collective swooning over Paul Mescal, the Irish newcomer who lit up the screen as Connell in the BBC’s adaptation of Sally Rooney’s beloved novel, Normal People. There were sightings of him with his shirt off running through Victoria Park, there were entire Instagram accounts dedicated to his chain.
Despite their incredible on-screen chemistry, it was quickly revealed that Mescal and his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones were not a real life couple, with Edgar-Jones confirmed to be in a relationship with Tom Varey (until this February that is – when Page Six reported that they had split up). Meanwhile Mescal was spotted on the elite dating app Raya, causing thousands to try to get membership, no doubt.
Now, though, it has been reported that Mescal is in a secret relationship with Grammy-nominated American songstress Phoebe Bridgers, with Raya merely a cover to keep the romance private. According to a source who spoke to the The Sun, the couple spent the Bank Holiday weekend together in London’s Shoreditch, where they were said to have been ‘chatting, laughing and quite tactile’.
Last year, according to the Daily Mail a source had claimed the two were smitten, saying: ‘Paul invited pals and they played wild drinking games. They’re both smitten. His membership on the celeb dating site Raya is a smokescreen to cover up that they’re secretly an item.’
The pair reportedly met after Bridgers followed Mescal on Instagram after becoming a fan of his when Normal People was airing. The two then ‘met’ online during a Zoom ‘vodcast’, reportedly staying to chat after the official event had ended.
So far, neither of them have commented publicly about the relationship.
