1. Every year, humans discard approximately 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste.

This is equivalent to stacking up the amount of plastic waste produced in one year as far as Mount Everest is tall. Even more staggering is the fact that 79% of all plastic waste produced is not recycled.

2. Every year, 1.29 million deaths are caused by air pollution.

This number is three times the amount of people who pass away due to road traffic accidents. Air pollution has become such a major issue that it is now considered to be a major threat to public health and can lead to serious illnesses such as cardiovascular and lung diseases.

3. The majority of water pollution is caused by humans.

66% of waters across the world are polluted, and 88% of these figures are caused by human-created pollutants.

4. One-third of greenhouse gas emissions come from human activities

A large portion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, for energy and transportation. This, combined with deforestation and other human-driven activities, is causing the planet’s climate to change.

5. Oceanic plastic pollution kills 1.1 million sea creatures every single year.

Over 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans every year. These plastics are being ingested by sea creatures, and it is estimated that plastic makes up to 60% of the total mass of many sea birds.

6. Industrial Activity is the Cause of 33% of All Global Pollution.

Industrial activities make up the majority of world pollution, with the production of toxic waste being one of the most damaging aspects. This waste can contain hazardous chemicals and heavy metals, and if it is not disposed of properly, it can seep into the environment and cause immense damage.

7. Every hour, over 10 million trees are cut down to produce paper.

The production of paper causes massive deforestation, which not only causes the loss of habitat, but it is also a major contributor to climate change.

8. E-Waste is a Growing Issue

Electronic waste (E-waste) accounts for 8% of global waste, and nearly 90% of it is disposed of in landfills, which are sources of hazardous materials that can seep into the environment.

9. Burning Fossil Fuels Releases Chemical Pollutants into the Air.

Burning of fossil fuels releases toxic chemicals such as Nitrogen Oxide, Sulphur Dioxide, and Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere, which are detrimental to the environment and our health.

10. Global Waste is Set to Double by 2030.

The amount of waste produced is increasing exponentially and if nothing is done to reduce and manage it, it is estimated that it will double by the year 2030.

This is a concerning fact, as it can lead to further destruction of the planet and its resources and will surely have a detrimental effect on our future.
